Detroit Golf Club has one of the largest caddie programs in the area. More than just numbers, the youth who have caddied at the Club have grown in to wonderful young adults. The process to join the ranks is rigorous and we screen our applicants thoroughly to make sure our Members are well-cared for.
In addition to knowledge of the game, they must provide a letter of recommendation from their teacher or pastor and write a short essay telling us what qualities would make them a good caddie.
All of this ensures the young men and women maintain the high standards our Members expect from Detroit Golf Club. As part of the program, we also give our dedicated caddies the opportunity to apply for scholarships after two years on the job. The connection between golfer and caddie is legendary and we know our caddies will leave a lasting impression.
THE EVANS SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION
The Evans Scholars Foundation is the nation’s largest privately funded college scholarship program. The Foundation, established by famed Chicago golfer Chick Evans, has provided college educations to more than 8,600 caddies while making tuition scholarship payments totaling more than $100 million. More than 800 caddies annually attend college on Evans Scholarships. Most Evans Scholars attend one of the 14 universities where the Foundation owns and operates a Scholarship House.
The scholarships are funded through contributions from more than 100,000 golfers, including 37,000 WGA Par Club members. All proceeds from the BMW Championship also benefit the Program. Detroit Golf Club is proud to be an Evans Nominating Clubs which recommends high school caddies for this honor.
DETROIT GOLF CLUB CADDIE SCHOLARSHIP FOUNDATION
In 2001, Members of Detroit Golf Club established The Detroit Golf Club Caddie Scholarship Foundation to supplement the excellent work that the Evans Scholars Foundation has been providing to caddies. The Detroit Golf Club membership has consistently been one of the highest contributors to the Evans Scholars Foundation for many years. The Detroit Golf Club Caddie Scholarship Foundation specifically benefits caddies of Detroit Golf Club, and is available whether the caddies choose higher education in Michigan, out of state, attend community college or a trade school. We believe we can attract and maintain excellent caddies at Detroit Golf Club, directly benefiting the young people of the City of Detroit, through our scholarship program.
