Junior Golf

The Junior Golf program at the Detroit Golf Club is one of a kind.
The Junior Golf program teaches children of all ages the great game of golf while instilling invaluable life lessons.

JUNIOR GOLF

Junior golf programs each year start with group instructions by members of the Detroit Golf Club Professional Staff. The programs conclude with the Junior Club Championship Tournaments in the fall.

The Junior Golf program gives children ages 7 (or have completed first grade) through 17 the opportunity to learn about the game of golf. The program instructed by our team of PGA Professionals, begins in mid-June and runs for 10 weeks.  Children are divided into seven groups based on ability including:

  • 18 South
    • 15.0 index or less to move to 18 North
  • 9 Holer
    • 26.0 index or less to move to 18 South
  • 7 Holer
    • 2 Junior golf scores of 49 or less to move to 9 Holer
  • 4 Holer
    • 2 Junior golf scores of 32 or less to move to 7 Holer
  • 2 Holer
    • 2 Junior golf scores of 20 or less to move to 4 Holer
  • Trooper
    • 2 Junior golf scores of 16 or less to move to 2 Holer
  • Ranger
    • Golf Staff will determine when the Junior can consistently advance the golf ball to move to Trooper.

Juniors learn to hone their skills in putting, chipping, pitching, woods, and irons while also learning about the Rules of Golf and proper Course Etiquette.

The Junior Golf program is a wonderful way for juniors and parents alike to progress and enjoy the game of golf.

For the more advanced Junior Golfer, the Detroit Golf Club participates in Inter-Club Matches against juniors from other clubs. This is an excellent opportunity for the juniors to play competitive golf, and to enjoy some of the other fine courses in the area. Six juniors play in each event. There are qualifying rounds to determine who plays in each match. To be eligible to play, players must be 18 years of age or younger on the first match date.

Boys and girls interested in additional competitive experience may play in events throughout the summer. The Adams and Meijer and Michigan PGA Junior Tours are an excellent opportunity for junior golfers in Michigan to gain tournament experience. The Golf Association of Michigan conducts the boys and girls Michigan Junior Amateur Championships. In addition, the United States Golf Association, the PGA of America, and the American Junior Golf Association all offer national junior tournaments.
