Head Golf Professional 

Jon is the ninth Head Golf Professional. Prior to joining DGC in 2002, Jon served as Head Golf Professional at Orchard Lake Country Club in Orchard Lake, Michigan. Before  joining Orchard Lake Country Club in 1990, Jon Gates served in similar capacities at the Travis Point Country Club in Ann Arbor, Michigan from 1986 through 1989 and at the  Mt. Pleasant Country Club in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan from 1983 until 1985. Jon also served as an Assistant Head Golf Professional at Grosse Ile Country Club in Grosse Ile,  Michigan from 1981 until 1982.

Jon has received numerous awards for his golf shops rating in the top 100 Golf Shops in the country by "Golf World Business-Americas 100 Best Golf Shops Private Club". He has also been named "Merchandiser of the Year" by the Michigan Section of the PGA on multiple occasions and he won the Bill Strausbaugh Award for two consecutive years. Fourteen of his former Assistant Professionals have moved on to become Head Professionals. 

His professional affliations include several years as a member of the Board of Directors and Committee Chairperson of the Michigan PGA. Jon is highly regarded by his peers and served as President of the Michigan PGA Section. Jon is PGA Certified in golf operations and is currently working towards certification in player development.  He graduated from Eastern Michigan University in 1981 with a Bachelor of Arts in Education.  A four year letter winner on the golf team, Jon was elected to the Eastern Michigan University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002.  In the off season, Jon coaches youth hockey & high school varsity hockey.  Jon and wife Patti reside in Novi with their three children, Ashley, Jim and Wesley.


Teaching Golf Professional 

Ken has been a member of the PGA since 1982, serving in various capacities in Michigan including Birmingham Country Club, Oakland University Golf Club, The Wyndgate  and Wabeek Country Club. Ken has a long history of exceptional playing including:
  • Two U.S. Opens
  • Six PGA Championships
  • One U.S. Senior Open
  • Two Senior PGA Championships
  • Three Buick Opens
  • Ken also won the Michigan PGA Championship three times (1989, 1991 and 2002) won the Michigan PGA Match Play Championship in 1992 and was named Michigan PGA Player of the Year in 1991. Ken also competed in seven National Club Pro-Championships. Ken is returning to DGC for his sixth season. He his family reside in Rochester.


Assistant Professional


Matt was elected into Class-A PGA Membership shortly after graduating Ferris State University in 2005 with a Bachelors Degree in Business Marketing and a specialty in Professional Golf Management. Matt has been a Level One TPI Certified Golf Fitness Instructor (Titleist Performance Institute) since 2008. He is a Mitchell Golf Certified Club-Fitter and Club-Repair Technician and is currently working toward more PGA Certification in Golf Operations.

Prior to joining the staff at Detroit Golf Club Matt was the First Assistant at Birchwood Farms Golf and Country Club in Harbor Springs, MI for the past three years. Before BFGCC he was the Head Men’s and Women’s Golf Coach at Brevard College in Brevard, NC and at the same time he was the Head Professional at Seven Falls Golf and River Club a brand new private community in Hendersonville, NC. He also spent time at the Cliffs in SC. As well as internships at Barton Creek Resort in Austin, TX; Bethesda Country Club in MD and True North Golf Club in Harbor Springs, MI.

Matt was born Toledo, OH and raised in Temperance, Michigan. He and his wife Tonya reside in Temperance, Michigan with their two children Jackson and Haylee.


Assistant Professional


Earl Anthony Cooper got his start in the golf business in 2011 as an Assistant at the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, FL and joined the staff at Detroit Golf Club in 2012. He returns to the PGA Golf Club for the winter months, but comes back to Detroit in the summer. He is proud alumni of Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA where he received a scholarship to play golf and earned a B.A. in political science. He is a seasoned player who has been around the game since the age of six. He has a deep passion for the game and loves to see juniors pick up a game that will last them a lifetime. As 2010 and 2011 most improved player, he was instrumental in leading the school to its first National Championship in 2010. Prior to attending Morehouse, he became the first African American all-state golfer for the state of Delaware and has continued to earn many golf honors and achievements.

Earl has also written a children's book titled "Hello, Maroon Tiger!” The book is centered on a day with the Morehouse College mascot. It engages early elementary age children and helps them visualize attending college when they grow up. He is currently working on another book that will be released this fall titled "Baby Bison 1st Homecoming" which is about Howard University in Washington D.C.

Earl was born in Flint, MI but raised in Wilmington, DE. He is the son of Earl and Katherine Cooper, with one younger brother and two older sisters. Earl’s favorite quote is "Dream big because dreams do come true."


Assistant Professional


Kate began her career in the golf business after graduating from Elon University in North Carolina in 2004. While at Elon, Kate earned a degree in English, and was a member of the Women’s Division I golf team for four years.

After college, Kate moved to Nashville, Tennessee where she worked for four years as an Assistant Golf Professional and Manager of Junior Programs and Events at Golf House Tennessee. She then relocated to Michigan, where she has worked for the past six seasons as an Assistant Golf Professional and Golf Shop Manager at Forest Lake Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Kate also worked as an assistant coach for the Oakland University golf teams from 2008-2010.

Kate was born and raised in Wilbraham, Massachusetts. She
currently resides in Rochester Hills, Michigan with her husband Brian and their three year old daughter Ashley.
