From an early age the game of golf and agronomy has been a significant part of my life. My family owned and operated a landscaping company (retail store, installation and construction) from my birth until 1985. We also had a family membership at a local golf course where I fell in love with the game. I remember bartering for my first set of golf clubs by landscaping our golf professional’s lawn. In high school, as part of the golf team, I spent a lot of time on that local course. I naturally took an interest in the agronomy side of golf with the background of our family business.
After high school I worked with Liebold Irrigation (while attending University of Western Illinois). Working with Liebold Irrigation I had the opportunity to work on many courses throughout the Midwest. I also met a lot of Golf Course Superintendents. The vast majority recommended Michigan State University as the school of choice for the profession. In the Fall of 1989 I enrolled in 4-year turfgrass program at Michigan State University.
Upon graduation I was hired as the assistant golf course superintendent at Muskegon Country Club. That Fall the acting Golf Course Superintendent resigned and I was hired as his replacement. For twenty years I was the Golf Course Superintendent of Muskegon Country Club which boasts a Donald Ross designed course constructed in the same time period as the course’s at Detroit Golf Club. Previously, I have also worked at Cedar Rapids Country Club in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; another Donald Ross jewel born of that same era. I certainly have a passion and respect for his architecture.
The day I stepped on Detroit Golf Clubs property I knew it was the perfect fit for me. I am excited to be part of the management team here at DGC. This Club has an unparalleled history and a promising future. From what I understand I am DGCs 7th Golf Course Superintendent to be blessed with the task of overseeing these two great golf courses. I don’t think I will make it to 54 years of service as Clem Wolfrom had as your last Golf Course Superintendent but I am looking forward to my future with your great club. Thank you for the honor of being your Golf Course Superintendent.
